City Hall has threatened to demolish Mrs Wakefield’s house. When a letter bearing news of the final decision arrives she refuses to open it until her son, Alan is with her. It is not easy for him to persuade his family to have Sunday lunch with his mother, but he manages. The events that follow are highly amusing as Alan’s wife and mother move from bickering with each other to turning against Alan. The house is saved, but Alan decides he has had enough of everyone and walks out, claiming he will return when he has freed all the caged birds in north London!
